BatchKnow reads the batch code printed on cosmetics and perfume to tell you the production date. You select the brand, enter the batch code exactly as printed, and get every date the code can mean. The service explains how each brand's batch codes work so you can verify the result yourself.
The checker runs in your browser or app, so nothing you type is sent to servers. It shows every possible date when a code repeats every ten years, tracks format changes across brands and manufacturers, and covers major perfume houses and skincare brands from Chanel to The Ordinary. The site explains in plain words how each code works and includes clear photos of where to find the code on packaging.

- Why do cosmetics not have printed expiry dates?
- The three biggest markets (EU, US, and Japan) allow cosmetics that keep well to leave the factory with only a batch code. The EU requires a best before date only for products that keep less than 30 months, the FDA does not require expiry dates at all, and Japan exempts stable products from carrying dates.
- Why does BatchKnow sometimes show multiple dates for one batch code?
- Most batch codes carry only one digit of the year, so a single digit can mean multiple years ten years apart. Instead of guessing, BatchKnow shows every year the code could mean and puts the most recent year that is not in the future at the top, allowing users to rule out other years themselves.
- How does BatchKnow verify its batch code rules?
- Every rule is tested against real products with printed dates from retail listings, importer stickers, factory expiry prints, and official recall lists. A rule only goes live when those printed dates agree with it, and comes down if they stop agreeing.
- Is the batch code the same as the expiry date?
- No. The date shown is the day, week or month the product was made (filled), not its expiry date. Whether the product is still good depends on how long it keeps unopened and the period after opening.
- Does BatchKnow send my batch codes to its servers?
- No. The decoder runs in your browser or app, and the brand and batch code you enter are processed on your device and are not transmitted to servers. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, there is no account to create, and there is no daily cap.
